Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums! Suggestions for lightweight long-sleeved summer shirts. Previous 1 2 Next. Suggestions for lightweight long-sleeved summer shirts May.
So I was wondering if anyone knew of some good lightweight shirts that are cool enough to wear in the summer heat? I know I typically settle for the hundreds of hay scratches on my arms and legs from wearing shorts and a tank top rather than wear long sleeves when its 80 or 90 out. I do have a history of melanoma in my family and even though I'm pretty diligent about sunscreen, wearing long sleeves when I'm riding and gardening would be a good idea.
Also, please suggest shirts for men too, not just women. I was helping my dad plant his garden this weekend. It was in the 80s and he had a sweatshirt on. Obviously he was sweating a lot and I think some nice lightweight shirts would be a good Father's Day gift. I live in these shirts in the warm months: I'm sure if you dig through Columbia's website you will find a long sleeve version. The best thing about these shirts is when you get wet hosing down a horse, as your shirt dries it doesn't get "wet horse" smelly.
The Colombia sun shirts are really good-http: They hold up well too. ETA the bargain basement at Cabelas often has them for much reduced prices I live in shirts similar to the Columbia, but from Sun Precautions. Bealles Outlets have a different brand than Columbia, less money and are just as nice. I wear them year round and love that they dry so quickly, but offer great sun protection. If it's in your budget, going with the specialty UV protection styles given is your best bet.
If you get something which is long sleeved but not UV protecting, still use sunscreen - the material just gives you added protection, but isn't necessarily enough on its own! I love my long sleeved Old Navy tops with stretch jersey material on the sides - they are nice enough to wear to work, but are light enough to wear around the horses. There was a thread about them at one point - the parent company had two much more expensive lines with the same shirts, one of which was a horsey line.
Right now I see other lightweight shirts but not those specifically, but I tend to fit well in their tops compared to other brands. A neighbor of mine has a upf 50 long sleeved shirt with an ice collar to help keep you even cooler specifically designed for riding.
Will get you the ordering info. I always buy a size larger than I need - the 'tent factor' makes a big difference, too! PS - I live in Houston, the land of the totally unreasonable summer!
I don't like the new styling of the Columbia sun shirts, they changed the front pockets into tiny useless things.
You can often find things there for very little. I buy used mens dress shirts, lite cotton or silk. I wear a tank top under and then knot the shirt at my waste. I find they work just fine.
But then I use tons of sunscreen. My life motto now is "You can't fix stupid! Libby There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness". I also used to wear my husband's lightweight wrangler western shirts-any time I had the chance I would just soak it in cold water creek crossings and wring it out then wear it until it was dry again. They're a very lightweight cotton and were very cool-worked great until they invented the SPF clothing Ooooh, I had no idea such things existed!
I'm having a terrible time with eczema on my forearms and it seems to get really angry after sun exposure, I'm going to have to give these a go. Mosey, learning about cooking with tequila and sun protection shirts! Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack in everything That's how the light gets in. I just bought a nice Nike Dri-Fit summer long sleeved shirt in a technical fabric.
For a short sleeve shirt, this is one of the most comfortable I've run across. The material is very soft and under-sleeve mesh vents cause fresh air to flow into the shirt whenever the arms are moved: Have one to sell?
